Players of the 80's

BILLY ABERCROMBY (1988/89) - Pl 11 (1), gls 0
Midfield player signed from St Mirren in 1988 by John Lambie. As well as playing for the club he acted as a coach. He failed to make a good impression in games he played in, and towards the end of the season played mostly in reserve games. Received a free transfer at his own request and joined Dunfermline.

CHARLIE ADAM (1989-90) - Pl 6 (1), gls 2
Signed from Dundee United in September 1989, Adam was an undoubtedly talented midfield player whose performances for Partick Thistle lacked commitment or feeling for the club. Scored twice for the club, against Morton and Alloa in the space of eight days. Travelling from Dundee for matches and training was also unsatisfactory and he was transferred to Forfar Athletic in 1990.

GORDON ARTHUR (1983-84) - Pl 2, gls 3/0
During a period of injury to John Brough, Gordon was signed on loan from Stirling Albion. His first game was in a great 5-1 victory at Somerset Park which endeared him to the fans. Played in only two games but made agreat impact and there were calls for him to be signed permanently. Stirling's first-team keeper, he was recalled to Annfield and from there joined Dumbarton and then Raith Rovers.

COLIN BRODIE (1986-87) - Pl 2, gls 3/0
With injuries to Jim Stewart and John Brough, Derek Johnstone required a temporary goalkeeper. Colin, understudy to Jim Gallacher, was signed on-loan from Clydebank. Played just two matches before Brough regained fitness, he returned to Kilbowie.

JOHN BROUGH (1983-84 and 1988-89) - Pl 145, gls 198/34
Signed from Hearts in December 1983 after winning under-21 honours. Good keeper who was extremely popular in his early time at Firhill. Missed many games through injury during his career here, his popularity waned after he showed great inconsistency and a poor attitude. He was given a free transfer at the end of 88-89 and unable to find a senior club he joined Dunbar United.

CHRIS BROWN (1986-87) - Pl 1
At the time on the groundstaff at Firhill, he was pressed into action as a trialist by Derek Johnstone. Played a poor game at right back, the Morton winger was given too much space and Thistle were beaten by 2-5. Went on to play amateur football.

JOHN BUCKLEY (1982-83 to 1983-84) - Pl 45(3), gls 6
Originally on loan from Celtic at the end of the first season in Division One as Peter Cormack's side pushed for promotion. Immediately established himself as a favourite of the crowd with his speed and accurate crosses from the left wing. Returned to Celtic at the end of the season but made a quick comeback when he joined Thistle along with a sum of money in return for Brian Whittaker. Played in the following season before leaving for Doncaster Rovers.

ANDY BRUCE (1983-84) - Pl 2, gls 2/1
Replaced Arthur as on-loan keeper during an injury to Brough. Came from Rangers on loan and returned to Ibrox just two games later as Brough regained fitness. Later in his career he joined Hearts.

ALAN CARSON (1986-87) - Pl 9 (6)
Left-sided player who was fielded in the forward line, in midfield and at left-back by manager Derek Johnstone. Despite a run in the first team he was unable to show good form and was given a free transfer at the end of the season.

WILLIE CAIRNS (1986-87) - Pl 35 (6)
Strong midfielder or centre-half who was signed from Queen's Park. Showed his better form playing in defence although he played most of his games in midfield unconvincingly, showing the poverty of the team at the time. Never able to make the transition he moved to Dumbarton at the end of the season.

JOE CARSON (1984-85 to 1986-87) - Pl 108, gls 10
Tall defender who was signed from Dumbarton at the beginning of 84-85 season. Good in the air, he was rather suspect on the ground. On occasion he played as a forward and scored two goals against Brechin in his first game in that position. His effort made him popular with the supporters and he won the Player of the Year award in 1987, before being given a free transfer by new manager Billy Lamont. Joined Stranraer before going junior at Vale of Leven and then Pollok. Appearances 108, goals 10.

TOM CARSON (1987-88) - Pl 6, gls 14/2
Another on-loan goalkeeper, signed from Dundee. A steady, competent keeper who suffered badly from a poor defence, he was at Firhill for two months until Brough recovered. He then returned to Dundee.
